I like the way Italy played against England in their opener of the Mondial. Cezare Prandelli’s Squadra Azzura is built around Andrea Pirlo as a leader and the player everyone else is working for on the field. They have to open for him the “channels” so he can make his precision passes through and have to double him and triple him up at the midfield , and cover up on him from behind with 3 stoppers on defense. Prandelli has played in five different structures since getting beat by Spain in Euro 2012 final 0-4. Just week ago he has announced that he will focus at the World Cup on 3-5-2, 4-3-1-2 and 4-3-3.He said that the 6 players on the field at any tactical structure will be Bouffon (meantime Sirigu will be replacing him), Chiellini, Barzagli, De Rossi, Balotelli and Pirlo. All the fielding systems and structures are designed to get the most out of Pirlo’s presence on the field. I am not sure that is the right strategy to built on one player – but we have already seen Maradona bringing the Argentines to the final at 1990 while the rest of the team was way less talented except may be Caniga.
Anyways – the Italians would not want to risk Pirlo for the third game against physically aggressive Uruguay and would want to close the story of qualifying from the group already this evening. Costa Rica has already done it’s best by bettering the Uruguayans and I doubt they will achieve anything tonight. The only advantage Costa Rica has is a fact that the game is played at the American continent but we already know that the Italians aren’t really a team depending on geographical conditions.
